Sun Prairie at a glance
Sun Prairie is Madison's most populous suburb, with 35,967 people at the 2020 census, and shares a border with the city. Many residents commute into Madison for work.
What that means for your roof
Sun Prairie has grown fast, so many neighbourhoods are full of homes from the 1990s onward, alongside an older core. Roofs from the building boom of the 1990s and early 2000s are reaching replacement age now. See roof replacement. Replacing several layers of old work at once, including flashing and vents, makes the most of the job.
Cold numbers
Sun Prairie's January average low is about 9°F and its July average high about 82°F. That swing, plus snow that sits for weeks, means ice dams and winter leaks are common. See ice dams.
Named on a sunny day
On June 9, 1837, a party of 45 men sent to build Wisconsin's territorial capital emerged from days of rain onto a sunlit prairie and carved "Sun Prairie" into a tree. Charles Bird returned two years later as the first settler; the village was incorporated in 1868 and voted to become a city in 1958. Open prairie still means homes on the edges of town take the full force of summer winds.
