Fitchburg at a glance
Fitchburg is a city of 29,609 people at the 2020 census, south of Madison, with the state estimating more than 37,000 by 2026. It covers about 35 square miles, from suburban neighbourhoods near the Madison line to protected farmland in the south.
What that means for your roof
Rapid growth means a lot of homes built in the last 30 years, many with builder-grade shingles that are now reaching middle age. When several houses in a subdivision were roofed at the same time, they tend to need replacing around the same time too. Read cold-weather roofing if you're planning for winter. Ask whether the roofer will check attic ventilation too, since many newer homes were built with the minimum number of vents.
Open country
The rural southern part of Fitchburg has wide-open fields with little to slow the wind. Homes there are more exposed to straight-line winds and hail from summer storms. See hail and wind damage.
A town that fought to stay itself
Farming began here in 1837, and the area was established as the Town of Greenfield in 1847, then renamed Fitchburg in 1853 after Fitchburg, Massachusetts. As Madison annexed land, the town fought for incorporation all the way to the Wisconsin Supreme Court and became a city on April 26, 1983. Former communities Fitchburg Center and Oak Hall are now part of it. Country homes may have outbuildings, barns and garages with their own roofs that need attention too.
