McFarland at a glance
McFarland is a village of about 9,000 people on Lake Waubesa, south of Madison, with Mud Lake to its south. US 51 is its main route to Madison and Stoughton.
What that means for your roof
After World War II McFarland grew into a residential community for Madison, so many homes date from the 1950s to the 1970s, with newer neighbourhoods since. Older roofs here may carry more than one layer of shingles; a tear-off shows what's underneath. See roof replacement. Mid-century homes may also have chimneys from old furnaces that are no longer used and can be capped or removed.
Lake wind
Homes facing Lake Waubesa take wind straight off the water, which can lift shingle edges and push rain under flashing. After a strong storm, look for lifted tabs along ridges and eaves; see hail and wind damage.
Mounds and ice houses
Indian Mound Park holds the Lewis Mound Group, burial mounds from the Woodland period. William Hugh McFarland founded the village in 1856, and early industries included wheat and tobacco farming and cutting ice from the lake for shipment to Chicago. Winter ice is still part of life here; read ice dams in Madison winters.
