Middleton is a city of 21,827 people about six miles west-northwest of downtown Madison, on the western shore of Lake Mendota. Its motto is "The Good Neighbor City."

From Peatville to Middleton

English settlers arrived in the 1840s and called the place Peatville, for the peat dug from its soil. It was renamed Middleton in 1848, after a community in Vermont, became a village in 1905 and a city in 1963. Today it's home to companies such as Electronic Theatre Controls and Spectrum Brands.
