Clearing Snow From Your Roof Safely
Most roofs carry normal Wisconsin snowfall without trouble. Heavy, wet snow, drifts and ice are different, and how you deal with them matters.
Request a rooferDo you need to?
Usually not. Consider it after very heavy snow, when drifts pile against a higher wall, on low-slope roofs, or if you're fighting ice dams.
Use a roof rake
A long-handled roof rake lets you pull snow off the lower few feet of roof while standing on the ground. Work slowly and leave a thin layer to protect the shingles.
Watch overhead
Snow and ice can slide off suddenly. Keep clear of the drip line, and watch for power lines when using a long metal rake.
Stay off the roof
Snowy roofs are extremely slippery, and falls are a serious risk. Leave roof-surface snow removal to professionals.
Warning signs
Sagging ceilings, doors that suddenly stick upstairs, new cracks in drywall or creaking sounds can mean a roof is under strain. Get everyone out of that area and have it checked.
Gutters and downspouts
Keep downspout outlets clear of snow so meltwater can drain away.
Flat and low roofs
Garages, porches and additions with low slopes hold snow longest and deserve the most attention.

Choosing a roof rake
Look for a rake with a lightweight extendable pole and a head that won't scrape shingles, such as one with small rollers or a plastic edge. Fibreglass poles are safer than metal near power lines. Pull snow down in small sections rather than trying to move it all at once.
After you clear it
Move the snow pile away from the foundation, downspouts and basement window wells, so it doesn't melt straight into the basement in spring. Check the eaves for ice that formed under the snow, and look for any shingles that came loose.
Ice that won't budge
If thick ice has already formed at the eaves, a roof rake won't remove it. Leave it to a professional who can melt channels safely rather than chipping.
